Seeing isn’t always believing

Professional photographer L.B. “Jeff” Jeffries breaks his leg while getting an action shot at an auto race. Confined to his New York apartment, he spends his time looking out of the rear window observing the neighbours. He begins to suspect that the man opposite may have murdered his wife. Jeff enlists the help of his society model girlfriend Lisa Freemont and his nurse Stella to investigate.

Typisk Hitchcock film (om jag redan vågar säga det). Spänning från start till slut. Bra skådespelare och ett enkelt manus. Mycket bra film. Man vill verkligen inte att de ska ha rätt i sina misstankar. Slutet är mycket spännande.

Wrong Time. Wrong Place. Wrong Number.

A case of mistaken identity lands Slevin (Josh Hartnett) into the middle of a war being plotted by two of the city’s most rival crime bosses: The Rabbi (Ben Kingsley) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). Slevin is under constant surveillance by relentless Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) as well as the infamous assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis) and finds himself having to hatch his own ingenious plot to get them before they get him.

Riktigt häftig film dom håller en igång och gissandes genom hela filmen fram till slutet då allt faller på plats. Jag kom att tänka på The Usual Suspects, men denna filmen är inte riktigt lika bra. Men nästan. Det blir en mycket stark trea.

The guest who’s dead on time

Brandon and Philip are two young men who share a New York apartment. They consider themselves intellectually superior to their friend David Kentley and as a consequence decide to murder him. Together they strangle David with a rope and placing the body in an old chest, they proceed to hold a small party. The guests include David’s father, his fiancée Janet and their old schoolteacher Rupert from whom they mistakenly took their ideas. As Brandon becomes increasingly more daring, Rupert begins to suspect.

Riktigt läckert med väldigt långa scener utan klipp. Tydligen innehåller filmen endast 9 olika tagningar. Underbart snyggt gjort. Spänningen är också på topp. Ungefär på samma sätta som i Shadow of a Doubt. En riktigt häftig film, i både “filmistiskt”- och i spännings-avseende. Missa den inte.

The Newton family lead a quiet life in the North California town of Santa Rosa. The Newton’s eldest daughter, ‘young Charlie’, decides that things need brightening up and resolves to contact her Uncle Charlie (after whom she is named) and invite him to stay. On arrival at the telegraph office she discovers he is already on his way. However, Uncle Charlie is being pursued by a couple of detectives who suspect him of being “The Merry Widow Murderer”, an evil strangler wanted in connection with the deaths of several rich East coast widows.

Såhär ska en spänningsfilm göras. Man hålls ju på spänningens kant genom större delen av filmen. Även om man ganska tidigt kan lista ut hur det ligger till, så hålls man ändå på halster. Sedan är Hitchcock himla duktig på att välja vinklar för att visa att något är fel.

3000 miles of terror!

When sabotage destroys part of an aircraft plant, plant worker Barry Kane is falsely blamed for the crime. Determined to clear his name, he sets out to track down the man he believes to be the actual saboteur, the mysterious Mr. Fry. He chases Fry across the western deserts to New York, where the two men confront each other atop the Statue of Liberty.

Min första riktiga Hitchcock-film (Fich ju min Hitchcock-box idag). Jag har sett Psycho tidigare, men det har väl alla gjort. 😉
Filmen drar igång i ett himla tempo och ena jaktscenen avlöser den andra. När konspirationen sakta löses, saktar filmen ner, men spänningen behålls.
Slutet kändes dock lite konstigt.

Welcome back to the Underworld

Underworld: Evolution continues the saga of war between the Death Dealers and the Lycans. The film goes back to the beginnings of the ancient feud between the two tribes as Selene (Kate Beckinsale), the beautiful vampire heroine, and Michael (Scott Speedman), the lycan hybrid, try to unlock the secrets of their bloodlines. This will be a modern tale of action, intrigue and forbidden love, which takes them into the battle to end all wars as the immortals must finally face their retribution.

Ungefär samma film som ettan, fast denna är nog snäppet bättre. Jag var inte speciellt förtjust i den första filmen. Men tyckte denna vara mera underhållande. Det blir en starkare 3:a än på den första filmen.

Based on a true story. An exhausted Catholic priest (Hurt) and a young idealistic English teacher (Dancy) finds themselves caught in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. They must now choose whether to stay with the thousands of Tutsis about to be massacred or to flee for safety.

Filmen känns väldigt lik Hotel Rwanda. Fast med lite sämre skådespelarinsatser. Den griper inte riktigt tag i en som Hotel Rwanda gjorde. En scen i filmen är dock väldigt gripande. När några totsi försökre fly.

This is the story of the fourth plane on September 11, 2001.

On September 11, 2001, America witnessed three terrorist attacks when three planes were hijacked and destroyed the pentagon and the two world trade centers. However, one plane in the mist of the hijacking never reached its target. Instead the passengers fought back to save thousands of lives even if it meant they too, would die. This is their story. The story of flight 93.

Det är dåligt skådespeleri och filmen känns ungefär som en tv-film. En sådan som visas på tv i två delar. Men i slutet av filmen gör det ont. Filmen griper en endast tack vare att den bygger på en verklig händelse.

UPDATE: Martin påpekade att det nog var TV-versionen av United 93 vi såg.

The Most Daring Rescue Mission Of Our Time Is A Story That Has Never Been Told

Set in the Philippines in 1945, THE GREAT RAID tells the true story of the 6th Ranger Battalion, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Mucci (Benjamin Bratt) who undertake a daring rescue mission against all odds. Traveling thirty miles behind enemy lines, the 6th Ranger Battalion aims to liberate over 500 American prisoners-of-war from the notorious Cabanatuan Japanese POW camp in the most audacious rescue ever.

Omslaget på denna filmen lurade mig lite. Jag trodde det skulle vara en film om det amerikanska inbördeskriget, men där fick jag för att jag inte fingranska omslaget. Blev dock positivt överraskad. Trodde det skulle vara en seg film om just amerikanska inbördeskriget. Istället ver det en underhålande film om POW under andra världskriget.
En bra film, men lite för amerikaniserad för min del. Det finns bättre filmer om man vill se amerikanska krigsfilmer och speciellt krigsfilmer från andra världskriget.

Some pigeons eat crumbs, others make history

The animated comedy tells the story of a lowly wood pigeon named Valiant, who overcomes his small size to become a hero in Great Britain’s Royal Air Force Homing Pigeon Service during World War II. The RHPS advanced the Allied cause by flying vital messages about enemy movements across the English Channel, whilst evading brutal attacks by the enemy’s Falcon Brigade.

Småmysig komedi som är snyggt animerad. Om du gillar brittisk komik är detta en film för dig. Annars kan du nog stå över. Ewan McGregor och Tim Curry gör ett härligt jobb med rösterna. Gillar du “animerade” fåglar på film, bör du inte missa Chicken Run som är snäppet bättre än denna.
